Promoting & Connecting the Next Generation

Events

Dear Friends of Shipping,

We are delighted to invite you to our next event in joint cooperation with HSBA – Hamburg School of Business Administration on the topic of "Disruptive Business and Digital Challenges – Experts Discuss the Future of Shipping".

Weak and volatile freight markets, oversupply of tonnage, statutory environmental challenges and liquidity paucity for marine projects suggest that the current business model is changing. Experts and business decision-makers agree that the 'industry should reinvent itself', but none really knows which direction to take or the appropriate mix of resources, expertise and risk. Nevertheless, all agree that digitalizing the industry is one of the necessary steps towards future disruptive and sustainable business models.

We offer the opportunity to explore the subject with the help of renown experts, who will enlighten us with ideas, views, lessons and examples.

When? 17th November 2015, 6.00 – 8.00 pm
Where? Hamburg Chamber of Commerce Alster-Zimmer
Cost? Free admission

Jonathan Lux will highlight the manner, in which mediation can be used during both court proceedings and the arbitral process, in order to achieve successful outcomes for clients. At the beginning, Jonathan will review the way, in which the court's procedures

can be used to encourage the parties to engage in mediation.

Then, the question whether an arbitration tribunal has the same power as the court stay of proceedings, so as to enable mediation to take place, will be further examined. He will also consider recent cases on multi-tier dispute resolution clauses and analyze how the courts have given effect to the public interest in encouraging parties to engage in friendly discussions before launching litigation. Finally, Jonathan will then contemplate, by reference to the relevant rules of the major bodies the manner in which procedures

can be structured, so as to ensure that a joined up system is achieved embracing both arbitration and mediation.

About Jonathan Lux
Jonathan is a former partner of Ince & Co and is a well-known mediator of commercial disputes. He is a barrister and a member of Stone Chambers. He has lectured widely and written numerous articles on the subject of mediation, and is co-author of ADR (Alternate Dispute Resolution) and Commercial Disputes.

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you at our SPNH-HSBA Event!

Yours sincerely

The Shipping Professional Network in Hamburg (SPNH) is a new platform for young shipping professionals. It is our goal to regularly host events where professionals from all areas of the industry can get together to network, socialise and learn more about the shipping industry.

Our events will offer you the opportunity to hear expert opinions on several shipping related topics - all presented by respected leaders from various fields in the maritime industry. These fields range from the bunker industry, ship valuation, maritime law, ports, piracy, ship classification, shipping finance, maritime economics, research and much more. Moreover, our members will also get the opportunity to take part in excursions to experience the world of shipping from the practical side.

There are many different platforms around, which offer their members the chance to network with their peers. But none of the established platforms is precisely focused on the support of the new shipping generation. SPNH will encourage young professionals who have several years of experience to make the most of the benefits that Hamburg, as a world-class maritime cluster, has to offer.

We are delighted to invite you to our Kick-Off Event, which will take place on Thursday the 31st of July 2014. The launch event will be held at the Hanse Lounge (see: http://www.hanse-lounge.de/)

It will be a first get-together in order to learn more about our network and our future projects as well as get in contact with new people from within the business.

Yours sincerely,
Isabel Dressel, Fabian Muschard & Maximilian Kuhlmann
