London International Shipping Week-Propelling World Trade is a new and important industry event focusing on London’s Vital role in the positive development of global shipping.
15 August 2013: The 3rd AGM was successfully held with a ‘new’ Board for 2013/14 being elected. This was followed by our traditional annual Summer Drinks at the Oyster Shed (overlooking the Thames River). We had an exotic twist as both co-sponsors had strong links with the Cayman Islands. The event was proudly sponsored by Maples and Calder law firm and the Cayman Islands International Shipping Registry. We would like to thank the two Board members who stood down, Marina Burima (AET Tankers) and Bridget Sands-Chigbo (Bahamas Maritime Authority). Marina will continue to be involved with business development of the SPNL.
01 August 2013: The 4th and final SPNL FutureLondon brainstorming session was held at the Mission To Seafarers. The participants shared their views in the form of a “round table” discussion, which was guided by Phil Parry, the chairman of Spinnaker Recruitment, our Recruitment Partner.
18 July 2013: The 3rd SPNL FutureLondon brainstorming session was held at the DNV, our Classification Partner. The participants were broken up into 3 working groups chaired by Dr Roger Prentis, Gustav Ellingsen and Claudio Chiste. Our DNV hosts, Martin Crawford-Brunt and Simon Mockler lead the way by presenting the pertinent points from the ground-breaking report entitled DNV’s Shipping 2020.
11 June 2013: The 2nd SPNL FutureLondon brainstorming session was held at the House of Lords, where we were proudly hosted by the longest serving shipping minister in living memory, Lord Clinton-Davis (Labour). Notable mention; another former shipping minister, Lord Higgins was also in attendance (Conservative). This provided a balanced view, with two former Shipping Ministers from different political views. We would like to thank our three excellent speakers for sparking off a lively debate. Our speakers were: Julian Bray (Editor of TradeWinds), Justein Ueland (CFO FlexLNG) and Huw Coffin (Senior Consultant at DNV).

14 May 2013: The 1st SPNL FutureLondon brainstorming session was held at the City Pipe, this was to be regarded as a precursor to the upcoming House of Lords hosted event, with the appropriate format being adhered to. The event was chaired by Dr Roger Prentis, current President of the Aldgate Ward Club and Special Adviser at the House of Lords.
21 March 2013: SPNL successfully held its first ever event on the iconic HQS Wellington. What better occasion to announce that two of our main backers have decided to renew sponsorship. DNV, has decided to renew sponsorship as SPNL Classification Partner, and Meteo as SPNL Corporate Sponsor.

04 October 2012: The Italian Young Shipowners (Giovani Armatori- Confitarma) held their annual meeting in Rome. This year’s theme being “The Maritime Industry Today: Ideas, thoughts and Proposals to Share Our Routes Towards For Tomorrow”. SPNL Chairman, Claudio Chiste, was invited to partake in a panel discussion on behalf of London’s young shipping professionals. The meeting was opened by Paolo d’Amico, President of Confitarma (Italian Shipowners Association). The moderator was the President of the Italian Young Shipowners, Valeria Novella. This was the significant step forward towards collaboration with our Italian young shipping professional counterparts, we look forward to strengthening this relationship, as well as other like-minded organisations around the world.

15 August 2012: SPNL held its second AGM in which a new Board was elected, with long standing Board member, Ilias Angelidis, stepping down from the Board. Immediately after the AGM, the traditional annual Summer Drinks followed at what has been described as “the most atmospheric place int he world”: The Dicken’s Inn. Set in a particulalrly beautiful location overlooking London’s finest yachts berthed in the basin and not to mention, the stunning Tower Bridge, london’s young shipping professionals converged to enjoy the scenic surroundings, over a refreshing glass of wine. The Chief Executive of Maritime London, Doug Barrow, shared a few wise words, before leading us into the toast to ‘kick off’ the Summer Drinks. Shortly after, there was a business card draw, in favour of the charity, OSCAR Campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children. The winning card won a dinner for tow at the Dicken’s Inn, with the two runner-up prizes winning a bottle of Italian wine. A total of £250 was raised. Special thanks to former Deputy Chairman Ilias Angelidis for his contribution; having prior served as the Treasurer, also contributing significantly towards the inception and success of SPNL.

02 April 2012: The Port of Bristol visit has now been confirmed. An invited group of SPNL members are scheduled for a port visit on 15th June 2012. Whilst we may all work in the shipping industry, not all have of us have had a chance to experience first-hand what we are actually supporting in our day to day jobs, i.e. trade of goods. What better way than to plan a day trip to a port?
The successful and privately operated Port of Bristol has been chosen for this excursion. We will also be benefitting from a guided tour courtesy of the Port of Bristol. Members will be sent a formal invitation closer to the time.
29 February 2012: We had our inaugural Baltic Exchange event which was overwhelmingly over-subscribed. For this double-header, we secured two excellent speakers:

17 August 2011: SPNL held its inaugural AGM on 17 August 2011 in which a new Board was elected, with Gustav Ellingsen and Lorenzo Casarosa stepping down from the Board. The AGM was followed by the memorable summer networking drinks onboard the replica vessel The Golden Hinde. 15 June 2010: The SPNL and the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) have signed an agreement to work together (link), the ICS is now the SPNL’s Institute Sponsor. This agreement, with such a renowned ‘professional body for those engaged in all aspects of shipping business’, is yet another significant milestone in the unifying of London’s shipping professionals. The ICS is the only internationally recognised professional body representing shipbrokers, ship managers and agents throughout the world.

24 March 2010: The Chamber of Shipping and SPNL today signed an agreement to work together in promoting knowledge about shipping in London and facilitate networking among young professionals in shipping.
