Dr Nick Chapman is a cargo risk engineer at insurers FM Global. He is the cargo specialist for EMEA, working with clients to identify, understand and mitigate risk across their supply chains. Before joining FM Global, Nick was engaged as a cargo expert to the marine insurance sector, focussing on cargo loss prevention and casualty investigation worldwide (his work took him to 22 different countries). He has authored several loss prevention articles for industry publications.
Nick holds an honours degree in Biology and a doctorate in Plant Science and Soil Physics, both from Durham Universityin the UK. He has published scientific articles, book chapters,and international conference papers, regarding his agricultural research at Rothamsted Research Institute. During his PhD, Nick also took up voluntary roles as a STEM Ambassador, a Researcher in Residence, and a Nuffield Crest Mentor, to promote the sciences in schools. He is a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (MIMarEST), the Royal Society of Biology (MRSB), the Biochemical Society and the Durham Union Debating Society.
Prior to working in the shipping sector, Nick was previously engaged in the food, energy, and UK government, sectors. This has encompassed quality assurance in a dairy packing factory, field research in Arctic Sweden, power development projects, and policy scoping for the life sciences.
Away from work, Nick continues to play football to a high level (having played semi-professionally and been Durham University first team captain). He also enjoys several otheroutdoor sports and activities, as well as photography and all things food related. Nick was appointed as an SPNL associate board member in June 2016.
