Started off in 2007 by London-based graduates from CASS Business School, London Business School and RINA.
Originally a “friends of friends” network to be inclusive of ‘like-minded’ professionals (irrespective of what school one went to etc) representing the fabric of the next generation in one’s maritime cluster, has since gone from strength to strength. From inception there has been significant interest from other maritime centres around the world launch sister organisations.
Our Identity is based on our Ethos, Core Values, Standards
Ethos:
We strive to promote and connect young shipping professionals; as well as add value to the broader maritime community we proudly form part of (universities, charities, regulatory bodies, government/think tanks etc). This is at the heart of what we do.
Core Values:
We adhere to the values embodied by the centuries-old traditional global maritime centre of our founding SPN branch, London, encapsulated by the Latin phrase, “dictum meum pactum” i.e. My word My Bond
This is in line with two iconic organisations with maritime links: Baltic Exchange (founded 1744) and Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Our Word Our Bond). It is important to inculcate this age old valued tenet – integrity – captured by the motto “Our Word, Our Bond” which has served the Baltic Exchange hundreds of years. As was the case hundreds of years ago, where one honoured an agreement by merely giving one’s word (not having to rely on a signed contract) these words continue to be relevant around the world today. At a time where financial centres face scrutiny and heightened regulation, we – as SPNI – have a role to play in communicating this to the next generation to ensure these fundamental values live on. See this article.
Standards:
The forum – no matter which means (be it networking events or port visit, seminar, lecture etc.) – revolves around “professional networking”. No matter how social the setting, one’s conduct is to be that of a professional at all times.
Each respective regional chairman is responsible for overseeing that Our Identity is maintained, with the SPNI President acting as the custodian ensuring each chairman is provided with the relevant guidelines.
SPNI President – Claudio Chiste
The motto of the London Stock Exchange (one of the world’s oldest stock exchanges). In Germany there is a similar concept, “Das wort des ehrbaren Kaufmanns”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ el_class=”inter-center”][vc_widget_sidebar sidebar_id=”td-international”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
