London, November 27, 2023: SPNL and RINA sign MoU

The Shipping Professional Network in London (SPNL) and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding on co-operation between the two entities, towards the promotion and enhancement of London, and the rest of the United Kingdom, as the world’s premier maritime centre.

SPNL was founded in 2007 as a meeting place for young shipping professionals in London. SPNL enjoys significant industry-wide support, with official backing from the UK Chamber of Shipping. Through regularly organised events, SPNL aims to bring together professionals from all aspects of the industry to network, socialise and learn more about the industry we proudly form part of.

RINA is the global governing body for naval architecture and maritime engineering. RINA supports individuals, companies and organisations who work in the design, construction and maintenance of marine vessels and structures. From its founding in 1860 to today, RINA has been leading the industry –standing as a knowledge centre for the latest ideas, RINA supports the continuous professional development of members, and informs positive change for the benefit of all.

The MoU outlines mutual co-operation between the members of the two organisations and sets the foundations for closer cooperations between the two communities. SPNL and RINA will seek to host an annual joint event, as well as facilitate cross-networking opportunities between the two organisations.

In addition, the two organizations will seek to leverage the existing promotional channels, including social media and mailing lists, to encourage participation in SPNL and RINA events, and a limited number of members from both organizations will benefit from discounts usually reserved only for each organization’s membership base.

Finally, to kickstart the partnership between the two entities, RINA and SPNL are inviting SPNL members to participate in the upcoming technical conference hosted by RINA.

As part of its commitment to addressing climate change, the IMO has been working on the development of a Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) for international shipping. The CII is intended to measure the carbon efficiency of ships and assess their relative carbon emissions performance.
