Perhaps not a commonly known fact… The Lloyd’s market has provided offshore reinsurance capacity to the Chinese insurance market since the 1970s. Over the decades a relationship of mutual support has developed and in 2000 Lloyd’s opened its representative office in Beijing.
SPNL Chair visited the Lloyd’s office in Shanghai, bearing the iconic London-derived “Lloyd’s” brand (with roots dating back to 1688 in the City of London, with the insurance market starting in Lloyd’s Coffee House, opened by Edward Lloyd). Eric Gao (CEO of Lloyd’s in China) was pleased to hear of SPNL, the leading forum for the next generation of London’s shipping community, and expressed a keen interest to attend one of our future events on his next London visit (hopefully as a speaker!).
